G.W. Butland (fl.1831-1843): An impressive and large gilt framed coastal oil painting on canvas by this well-respected maritime, landscape and coastal scenes artist. This is a coastal scene entitled “View of the Sussex Coast” taking in not just details of several sea-faring craft but life along the shoreline and harbourside.
Butland exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Royal Society of British Artists (Suffolk Street) between 1831-1843. He lived in the City of London, Greenhithe in Kent and later in Fulham.
Signed and dated to the lower right corner (on the end of a log, next to a barrel).
