A charming and fine quality gilt-framed oval painted Portrait – Oil on Canvas – of a smiling young Girl clasping a Posy of Forget-me-Nots in her right hand. Signed to the back by the artist ‘Edward Davis of Worcester’. Signature protected by transparent cover top right.

The painting is behind an oval mask and within a good gilt frame. In excellent condition and ready to hang.

Edward Thompson DAVIS (1833-1867) is an almost forgotten painter of genre scenes who worked in Worcester and came into prominence when an album of his drawings was sold at Christies Auctions in 1951. He entered the Birmingham School of Design under J. Kyd; Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1854-67. Amongst his best works are ‘On the way to School’; ‘Granny’s Spectacles’; ‘Words of Peace’; and ‘The Little Peg Top’. His “A game of marbles” was featured in the 1962 Arts Council Exhibition of Victorian Paintings.
