** In the 18th century the method of producing tubes of brass and copper had not yet been mastered, and the conventional process at the time was to cast the stem in two halves which were then braised together (hence the seams) before being peened to the base.  The underside of the base was then turned on a lathe, resulting in a smooth semi-polished finish.
