Samuel Prout: a fine and detailed watercolour of the city of Louvain (now called Leuven) in Belgium, east of Brussels and famous for its 15th century buildings and breweries. Typical of this artist: very finely painted; unsigned but with a note on the back stating it is inscribed on the reverse of the painting itself: “Louvain ~ S. Prout and dated 1832”. 11.5 x 9.5 ins (29 x 24cms) including the mount and slender frame.

** Samuel Prout (1783-1852) born in Plymouth and widely acclaimed as one of the “masters of British watercolour architectural painters”. He travelled to a number of cities in Northern Europe and in 1829 he was appointed the coveted title of ‘Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary’ to King George IV and afterwards to Queen Victoria.
