A CHARMING FRENCH STRIKING CARRIAGE CLOCK by MARGAINE

Price: £785
Stock No. 5316/k

A delightful late 19th century French CARRIAGE CLOCK by the well-known maker Margaine, complete with its original high quality numbered leather travelling case and numbered key. The beautiful quality case, with its substantial shaped and reeded handle contains the eight-day movement which strikes hours and half-hours melodiously on a gong. It retains its original lever platform escapement and is signed with the Margaine trademark (the initials “A”and “M” either side of a beehive) lower left corner of the backplate.

It is complete with its very good gilt-tooled green leather numbered travelling case (9208) a number that also appears on the original winding key and on the movement of the clock itself.  A very good Carriage Clock in particularly good condition and complete with all its original accoutrements.

** Francoise Arsène MARGAINE was a well-known French maker of beautiful Carriage Clocks.  He worked at Rue Bondy 54,  and at Rue Beranger 22, both in Paris and won the Silver medal for his “pendules” at the Paris Exhibition of 1878 and again in 1889. It is quite rare to find carriage clocks retaining their original numbered travelling cases and numbered keys after some 140 years or so.  Highly recommended.
