Unusual 19th century brass bound mahogany Writing Box / lectern

Price: £875
Stock No. 1818/A

An interesting 19th century brass bound mahogany writing slope with unusual yet very useful lectern capability.

The box itself has a semi-secret drawer to one side released by pulling out a brass pin, lodged under the lid.

The box lid opens to reveal a fitted interior with a green and gold embossed leather writing surface. A pen and ink section, includes a few pens and quills. There are two lift up flaps, each containing storage inside. (Inside we found a newspaper dated 1844). To the left side of the leather writing surface is a hinged brass bar that opens and slots into holes on the edge of the box in order for the lid to be tilted, fixed and used as a reading stand / lectern. The lid can be propped into one of three positions. A wooden spar with two pins on the base can be slotted into the lid, for lectern purposes (see photo’s).

Original brass carry handles and working lock and key.
