SPLENDID KINGWOOD FULLY-FITTED DRESSING CASE
Price: £1650Stock No. 5482/k
A particularly fine quality, William IVth period, and complete DRESSING CASE & JEWELLERY BOX in remarkably good condition. The box itself is veneered in finest figured kingwood (dalbergia cearensis) ~ a rare slow-growing hardwood found mainly in Brazil and occasionally in Mexico ~ which is inlaid with brass lines; edged with cast brass and with inset with shaped brass handles.
The lid opens to reveal the gorgeous contents which comprise ten scent bottles and jars, each with beautifully engraved silver-gilt lids, which are inset with solid gold (vacant) circular cartouches. These are arranged around the central tool pad, which contains its full set of tools including two pairs of matching scissors; corkscrew; tweezers and other mother-of-pearl handled implements. A jewellery compartment can be found under this tool pad, with a further large velvet-lined compartment below for further jewellery.
Within the lid is the fine kingwood-bordered easel mirror and a document/letter pouch which contains the original gilt-tooled leather makers label for: Wells & Lambe “To the Queen”, Cockspur Street (London). All the silver lids are full hallmarked for London 1837 (William IV: 1830-1837, succeeded by his niece, Queen Victoria). Wonderful condition and complete. Highly recommended. 34 x 23 x 15cms.
