SOLDANO: A FINE FRENCH REPEATER

JOSEPH SOLDANO: a fine quality French striking and repeating CARRIAGE CLOCK in full working order. This pretty and quite early clock is housed within an attractive case which retains its original bright gilding, whilst the eight-day movement, which retains its original platform escapement, strikes hours and half-hours on a gong, repeating hours at will via the upper button.  Good clear enamel dial in perfect condition, and very fine blued steel (typical of clocks by this maker). Signed “Soldano” underneath the platform.  13cms high (handle down) 9cms wide. c1870

** JOSEPH SOLDANO was a maker of “fine Carriage Clocks” and was awarded medals at the Paris Exhibitions of 1855 and 1878. It was recorded at the time that: “the finish of the movements was conventional but the escapements have been treated with particular care”.  Several items (on display) merited “the highest praise”. (Revue Chronometrique, page 70 ~ report on the 1878 exhibition)
