LARGE “VIENNA” COLD-PAINTED BRONZE EAGLE
Price: £850Stock No. 5346/k
An impressive, large Austrian “Vienna” cold-painted BRONZE EAGLE perched upon a rock. The eagle, typically realistically painted true-to-life, appears to have just alighted on the rock, its wings outstretched. Very much in the style of Franz Xaver Bergmann (though apparently unsigned) this fine and quite heavy bronze measures: 37cms wide across the wing-tips and 25cms high. Austrian c1900.
** Franz Xaver BERGMANN (1861-1936) was the owner and inspiration of a Viennese foundry that produced a large number of most realistic animals and some other subjects, that became very popular at the time, and indeed remain so. He was noted for his detailed and colourful work, using his so-called ‘dust-paint’ to create lifelike figures. The recipe for the paint he used has now been lost.
