A good ‘Gorge’ cased French brass repeating Carriage Clock (s/n 5657). Originally retailed by Payne & Co, 163 New Bond Street, London. Although no trade mark visible this clock was almost certainly made by the famous Parisian clockmaker Drocourt. (Payne & Co were known to almost exclusively buy their carriage clocks direct from Drocourt).
The 8-day movement retains its original platform lever escapement, striking hours and half-hours on a bell. Repeating the last hour at will by depressing the button on top. The enamel dial displays both Roman and Arabic numbering, with dot five-minute markers and classic blued-steel ‘moon’ hands. Each bevelled glass panel is in perfect condition, including the rectangular top panel. Comes with two keys (not original).
Date: The case and movement display the same serial number 5657, which helps to date this clock to between 1860-1865.
