FRENCH REPEATING CARRIAGE CLOCK BY JACOT

HENRI JACOT: a good late 19th century French CARRIAGE CLOCK by this famous maker. The good quality case is of “Corniche” design, with bevelled glass panels to the front; sides and back, whilst the 8-day movement retains its original lever platform escapement. It strikes hours and half-hours on a gong, repeating the hours at will. The fine enamel dial is perfect, as are the original fine blued steel ‘spade’ hands. Stamped with the Jacot trademark to the backplate and numbered 4930, suggesting a date of circa 1880. Good robust action; excellent working order and guaranteed for at least two years. 19cms high, with handle up.

** HENRI JACOT was one of the great makers of Carriage Clocks in the mid 19th century, unusual in that he made all of the parts, including the cases, rather than rely upon outside sources.  Indeed he also made the tools for use in their production, including the “Jacot” hand-operated lathe used to polish or burnish pivots.  Henri (Senior) died in 1868 to be succeeded by his equally renowned son, also Henri. The iconic Jacot trademark, of a parrot on a stand flanked by the initials “H” and “J” was first introduced circa 1878.
