Pierre Jules Mêne: a finely modelled and well cast sculpture of a retriever by this famous member of the French animalier school. Typical of his work, this realistic bronze is signed within the naturalistic bronze base. French circa 1850-60.

** Pierre Jules Mêne(1810-1879 was an important member of the French ‘animalier’
movement, noted for his sculptures of domestic animals. His first work in London
was exhibited in 1849 and he specialised in smaller bronze figures, which explains
why none of his work appears as public statuary.
