A late 19th Century gilt framed watercolour painting “Farmer with two milking Cows”. A charming bucolic agricultural scene depicting a farmyard surrounded by trees, with a farmer driving two cows towards their byre, for milking perhaps? Watching over them nearby is a brown & white spaniel type dog.
Signed to the lower right corner.
Dimensions (frame): Height: 21 inches x Width: 16 inches (53.4 x 41 cm)
Condition: Colours have faired well and remain bright. The frame and mount show signs of wear. It might benefit from being re-framed/mounted.
Dated: c. 1880-1900.
What is known about the artist: John Robert Keitley DUFF (1862 – 1938) – Was a London painter of landscape and figural subjects, he used oil, watercolour and pastel. He was also an etcher. He studied at the Slade School under Legros. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1891. Also at the Royal Society of British Artists (Suffolk Street, London), New Watercolour Society, and Royal Society of Painters and Etchers. He was elected into the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1913; the ARE in 1914 and the RE in 1919. He published a book “Pastel: A manual for beginners”. His subjects were usually pastoral and romantic landscapes (e.g. Autumn Pasture) and often featured the effects of dusk and sunset.
