FINE LARGE BRONZE BUSHEL MEASURE DATED 1834

Price: £2650
Stock No. 5395/k

A large, heavy and rare solid bronze BUSHEL MEASURE of substantial size and in superb condition, due to the fact it is probably virtually indestructible!  Originally used to officially measure dry goods (such as grain), and cast with two side carrying handles, it is engraved with: “Imperial Bushel” and “County of Lancaster 1834”, with various “proof” marks around the rim. This superb measure is ideal for use today as a highly impressive Wine Cooler ~ it will hold at least eight bottles upright complete with ice!  25ins wide across the handles.

** Such measures were originally used by Customs & Excise Officers to check that market traders were not under-selling their customers. An offender would likely be heavily fined, whilst repeat offenders were known to be ‘banished’ to the Colonies!
