FERDINAND PREISS: (1882-1943) was born in Odenwald (South-West Germany), and orphaned aged 15 when he moved to live with the famous ivory carver Philipp Willman. He left in 1901 and met Arthur Kassler with whom he started a joint ivory carving business in Berlin. From 1910 onwards, the company started to produce ‘cabinet’ statues combining ivory and bronze, many of children and later figures of people engaged in various sports, which are highly desirable today. The company closed in 1943, when Preiss died from a brain tumour.
