A HIGH QUALITY 2nd quarter 18th century (George II) Bureau Bookcase.
Made of finest flame-mahogany with book-matched doors to the top section, also to the bureau fall-front, and main drawer fronts. All with original engraved brass handles and fittings. Two pull out candle-trays below upper cupboard doors and above bureau section.
The doors open on the top to reveal two horizontal book shelves and nine adjustable vertical ‘shelves’ / dividers. Three mahogany fronted oak-lined drawers with brass knobs. The finial is made up of two scrolling carved roundels with a flower to each side and a carved central scallop shell. The doors are secured by unusual discreet brass ball hinges.
The bureau with pull out lopers opens to reveal six oak-lined drawers and a central cupboard with locking door. To the top of the space are two somewhat hidden fretwork decorated drawers which pull out to reveal good inside. The fall-flap has a green leather writing surface with gilded Greek pattern border.
The drawer section to the base is made up of two small oak-lined drawers and three graduating full-width oak-lined drawers under. All three keys are present together with a spare. The whole unit is supported on ogee bracket feet.
