A VERY FINE MOTHER-OF-PEARL SEWING BOX

Price: £895
Stock No. 5467/k

A particularly fine and beautiful quality mid-19th century Mother-of-Pearl SEWING BOX, in superb original condition. The box is veneered with large sections of mother-of-pearl, engraved to the lid with flowers and leaves. This opens to reveal firstly, a lift-out tray of implements and tools, and secondly, a further selection of original items below.

These include: MOP needle case; MOP pin cusion; solid MOP winders; dividers; a charming hinged ruler; two pairs of scissors; silver propelling pencial (signed Samson Mordan); stiletto; bodkin; penknife and a thimble, which is unmarked but heavy and probably gold. One pair of scissors is marked “Leuchars” which partlfy accounts for the superb quality of both box and its fittings. 6 x 3.25ins. (15.25 x 8.25cms).

** Mother-of-pearl boxes that utilise large pieces of shell are rare and quite early. The size of the upper central panel for example, measures 11 x 4cms, which indicates the size of the shell that was used. Later boxes (including tea caddies) use much smaller ‘parquetry’ pieces and as a result are less desirable.
