A VERY FINE DRESSING & JEWELLERY CASE BY EDWARDS
Price: £1850Stock No. 5468/k
A particularly fine quality, quite large and very early Victorian DRESSING & JEWELLERY CASE in superb condition. The box itself is of finest figured rosewood, edged with cast brass to all corners and with recessed brass military-style handles. The lid is superbly inlaid with the owners initials and opens to reveal the beautifully fitted interior with twelve bottles and jars, all with finely engraved silver hallmarked tops.
These are arranged around a central shaped pad containing silver pencil with bloodstone seal (signed S. Mordan); corkscrew; MOP penknife; two pairs of scissors; MOP and silver pen and four other MOP-handled tools and implements. This tray lifts out to reveal a large removable tray (for costume jewellery?) and a further shallow padded silk-lined compartment below for the more valuable items. The lid contains a hidden mirror (could do with re-silvering perhaps?) and a document pouch which is signed in gilt (see image).
Every silver lid is hallmarked for London 1839 (the year after Queen Victoria’s coronation) and the box measures 14 x 10ins (35.5 x 25.5cms). A lovely Dressing/Jewellery case; highly recommended
