A SKETCH BY SIR EDWIN LANDSEER (?) OIL PAINTING
Price: £450Stock No. 5199/k
An intriguing OIL PAINTING SKETCH on canvas depicting a groom, wearing breeches and waistcoat, leading a dappled grey horse into a stable. Although unsigned, there is a fascinating inscription on a piece of old canvas affixed to the reverse (illustrated) which reads:
“Bought at the Sale of Mrs. Makenzie, sister of Edwin Landseer and believed to be (..?..) as a sketch by Edwin Landseer”.
This oil painting has be re-lined but the canvas inscription is clearly old, whilst the confident brushstrokes and general composition may well indicate that this is indeed by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873) well known for his paintings of animals, particularly horses, dogs and stags. 17.5 x 14.25ins (44.5 x 36cms) including the later frame.
