A MOST IMPRESSIVE AND DECORATIVE FRENCH “MYSTERY” CLOCK
Price: £2450Stock No. 5347/k
A particularly fine quality and impressive late 19th century French MYSTERY CLOCK in perfect working order. This wonderfully decorative “Pendule de Cheminee”, intended to be the centre of attention on the mantelpiece is certainly eye-catching ~ indeed likely to be the subject of animated discussion when first viewed! The white Carrara marble lyre-shaped case is beautifully embellished with ormolu mounts of swags, garlands and beading whilst surmounted by an ormolu “sun” perhaps in homage to King Louis IV (1643-1715) who was known as le Roi Soleil, or “The Sun King”.
The eight-day movement strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell with its fine convex enamel dial in perfect condition as indeed are the original engraved and pretty gilded hands. The pendulum, with its bi-metallic rods, comprises a complete circle of brilliant-cut paste stones which appears to swing back-and-forth without apparent power ~ thus a “mystery” clock. Perfect working order and guaranteed at least two years. Dimensions: 51cms high overall; 24cms wide; 14cms deep maximum. (20 x 9.5 x 5.5ins) French c1880.
