A good and imposing PAIR of gilt framed oil paintings on canvas of Welsh mountain and rural scenes, one featuring a drovers pool with sheep. The other a waterfall with a mill in the background. Both signed and dated (1905) by the artist William Edward ELLIS.
“A Lane in Dolgelly (Dolgellau), North Wales” this delightful and imposing painting features a small flock of sheep approaching a drovers pool being driven by the shepherd with his dog. His wife and daughter (?) walking ahead towards their quaint country cottage in the mid-ground. Beautifuly painted in the Victorian style specifically the trees and with the Mountains of Snowdonia in the background. Excellent condition, no cracks or damage evident. Signed and dated 1905 (bottom left corner) by the Artist. Title inscribed verso. See further details about the artist below (30 x 20 inches).
“Old Welsh Mill near Bettws-Y-Coed” paired with the painting above. Again delightfully painted in the Victorian style and in excellent condition with no cracks or damage evident. This painting features a Mill house adjacent to a small waterfall with tumbling waters and the mountains of Snowdonia in the background. There is a couple looking-on outside the mill house, one seated on a grassy bank watching over the water, the other seemingly busy in the mid ground. Signed and dated (1905) bottom left corner. Titled inscribed verso. (30 x 20 inches).
William Edward ELLIS was a Birmingham based Landscape painter. He was quite prolific and painted many paintings as commissions. Indeed, during his time he exhibited a total of 178 works at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, and 2 landscapes at the breakaway exhibition group the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street in 1863 and 1864.
