Gillows of Lancaster: a very fine quality and totally original early/mid 19th century rosewood DAVENPORT in excellent original condition.   This lovely example boasts all the delightful features offered by Gillows, including: original pierced brass gallery; original blind-tooled leather writing surface; beaded decoration around the top; two small drawers to the interior plus original braid “keeps” for notes & visiting cards etc., “secret” sliding and hinged pen-and-ink drawer (containing its unusual original glass ink bottle); large slides to both sides; four mahogany-lined drawers (with recessed “military” brass handles) behind the right-hand door; solid rosewood “apple” shaped feet with hidden castors and of course the whole top slides forward when in use.

The figuring to the rosewood is exceptional and of fine warm colour, whilst the Bramah lock comes complete with its original Bramah key, which also fits (and works!) the side door. 36ins high; 20.5ins deep when closed and 22.5ins wide.  c1830-45.

** A very similar example is described and illustrated in “Gillows of London & Lancaster” by Susan Stuart.
