Impressive framed 19th Century Marine Oil Painting on canvas – Gustave de Breanski

Price: £2450
Stock No. 1779/A

Gustave De BREANSKI (fl. 1856-98): An impressive 19th Century Marine Oil Painting on canvas mounted in original heavy giltwood and gesso frame.

The painting depicts a harbour scene (a note verso indicates “Near Emsworth, Sussex”) with fishing boats and houses.

Condition: The condition overall is very good. A sticker verso indicates the painting was restored in 1983. The same year it would appear to have been exhibited at a Gallery in Winchester. It looks like it may have been relined at that point. Paint is in excellent condition, colours are still vibrant and there is no cracking. With c.42 years of dust buildup and soiling since it’s restoration, it would inevitably benefit from a modest clean. But it is ready to hang ‘as is’. The frame is substantial and heavy. Again it is in pretty good condition. A few minor chips, but nothing major missing or damaged. Chain link hanging loops.

Signed to the lower left corner. (See image)

Dimensions: 125 x 90 cm (including frame)

Dated: c.1870-80.

About the artist: Gustave de Breanski (c.1856-98) was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes; Brother Alfred de Breanski. Like all the Breanski family, he painted landscapes, highland and river scenes, but he made more of a speciality of coastal scenes, often with fishing boats. His style is much broader and more impressionistic than Alfred.
