A good late 18th century “rolled paper” TEA CADDY in fine original condition, complete with gilt “axehead” handle to the lid. The front incorporates a small oval mirror plate to the centre whilst the sides feature rolled paper ovals, the back with a similar vase. The lid opens to reveal the interior with remnants of the original lead lining, whilst lock and hinges are also original. 5.5ins wide; 4ins deep; 4.5ins high. circa 1785.
** The art of rolling paper into small coils which were coloured and gilded and applied primarily to tea caddies, was a popular pastime amongst “ladies of leisure” in the late 18th century. It was taught in lady’s schools and magazine articles instructed readers in the technique.
