1884/18: A good late 18th/early 19th century NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER signed by Susan Mary Williams of the Lozells Establishment. Finely sewn with peacocks; lions; trees and shrubs together with religious text within an ornate border. It retains its good bright colours. 23 x 21ins (58.5 x 53.5cms) including its narrow ebonised frame. *Lozells is a loosely-defined area of West Birmingham, that currently is home to Aston Villa Football Club. In the late 18th/early 19th century various religious schools were established in the area, and it is likely that the "Lozells Establishment" was one of these. c.1880
