1738/18: GILLOWS of LANCASTER: a lovely quality solid rosewood FLOWER or CROCUS TABLE in fine condition. Typical of Gillows quality, the solid carved gallery top incorporates a removable lid (accessed by a push button) which reveals the shallow compartment below. With bead-and-dart moulding around the frieze, it is raised on a fine turned column leading to a gadrooned collar and beautifully carved tripod legs and feet. 32ins (81cms) high. *The purpose of these unique tables was to allow crocus bulbs to remain dormant under the lid. A couple of weeks beforehand, the top would be removed; the bulbs watered, so that they bloomed in time for the important ball! c.1825
