1639/18: LEIGH-PEMBERTON: a fine PAIR of OIL PAINTINGS on panel entitled on the original labels to the reverse: "The Age of Jazz" and "The Edwardian Era". Brightly painted and full of charm, they depict the fashions and pastimes of their age. They are in excellent condition and complete with their original frames. 28ins x 24ins including frames. (71x61cms) * John Leigh-Pemberton, born in 1911 and brother of a Governor of the Bank of England, was an artist and illustrator. Educated at Eton and a Flying Instructor in the Second World War, he decorated the interiors of a number of ships and worked on the Shell Guide Series. c.1949

1575/17: A beautiful OIL PAINTING on panel which depicts a family gathering being entertained by an itinerant traveller playing a small flute whilst his two performing dogs dance to the delight of the children. The quality of this work is utterly charming and the depiction of the figures is particularly emotive. The table is set with partially consumed food; chickens peck at the crumbs ~ there is much going on! Signed and dated 1859. 15 x 13.5ins unframed. *Jean Alphonse Roehn (1799-1864) was born, worked and died in Paris. He exhibited regularly at the yearly Salon and his works were almost exclusively settings from everyday life, for which he had an obvious talent. c.1859

1540/17: "THROUGH THE FOREST": a charming and quite large OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS by Edward Holmes RBA. It depicts a young lad leading a girl (his sister?) on a donkey, as they emerge along a track from the edge of a forest, preceded by their pet dog. Beautifully composed and very finely painted, this good oil painting measures: 34 ins by 29ins (86 x 74cms) including the frame. Signed and dated: 1881. * Edward Holmes RBA (1841-1891) was a fine landscape painter who exhibited this particular painting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1883 No. 314. c.1881

1416/17: ANONYMOUS: an interesting and somewhat speculative Continental OIL PAINTING on panel possibly after the 17th century Dutch painter Johannes Lingelbach. This well-composed view depicts various figures and livestock on the grassy banks of a rural harbour, with sailing vessels moored behind, some flying the Dutch flag. A church tower can be seen on the left with hills behind. Good condition. 22 x 18ins including the frame. (56 x 45.5cms) c.1800

1411/17: M.M.JACOBI: an attractive and well composed MARINE OIL PAINTING on canvas depicting a busy seascape in the Channel. A Dutch barge can be seen in the foreground with a British Man o' War behind, flying the white ensign. Signed (lower left corner) and inscribed on the back: "Portsmouth Harbour". 29ins wide; 21ins high including the frame. (73.5 x 53cms) c.1885

1324/16: AXEL NORDGREN: a charming landscape OIL PAINTING on canvas of an Alpine scene, probably in the Bavarian region of Southern Germany. It depicts a mountain village, with partially snow-covered peaks in the background and a figure carrying a basket walking up a path to the foreground. Signed and dated 1858. 27 x 19ins (68.5 x 48cms) including the frame. *Axel Wilhelm NORDGREN was born in Sweden in 1828 and later studied art in Dusseldorf, where in remained for the rest of his life. He died in 1888. c.1858
