French Oil Painting
2003/19: Charles MALAPEAU (French, born 1827): an interesting OIL PAINTING on canvas which depicts a harbour scene in Calvados ~ the department of the Normandy region of North-West France, taking its name from a cluster of rocks on the Channel coast. The painting portrays a number of local figures going about their business with some typical tall French buildings behind and various boats at sea. Signed and dated (1881) lower left corner. 32 x 24ins including the ornate frame. *Charles Alexis Emmanuel Malapeau was born in 1827 and died in 1885. The reverse of this painting has an original label (perhaps written by the artist himself?) which describes the scene in French.
