18th century verge wall clock
1890/18: John Harris, LONDON: A small 18th century WALL CLOCK in full working order, with its original eight-day VERGE movement. The mahogany case features a deeply moulded dial surround, whilst the 10-inch diameter silvered dial is engraved with the signature. Guaranteed for at least two years. *There are a few clockmakers of this name, but only two who worked in London. This is likely to be John Harris, son of William Aaron Harris. Apprenticed in 1761 hebecame a member of the Clockmakers Company in 1772 (NB: The "verge" or "crown wheel" escapement is the earliest known type of mechanical escapement).
