1859/18: HENRI FUGERE: an unusual and quite large cast BRONZE DISH by this famous French sculptor. Of the Art Nouveau period, it depicts a naked young woman reclining in a field whilst holding flowers in her left hand. The two handles show distinct influences of the Art Nouveau movement, and it is signed by the artist, lower right. 16.5ins (42cms) wide. *Henri Fugere (French 1872-1944) was a statuary artist, born in St. Mande, a city to the North of Paris. He studied in Paris with Barrias and Cavalier amongst others, and was influential in the Art Deco movement for 'chryselephantine' figures (usually a bronze body with ivory face, hands and feet) made famous by Chiparus, Preiss and others.
